Russia appeals against FIFA, UEFA ban

Lausanne: Russia’s football federation on Tuesday appealed for the lifting of sanctions and other penalties imposed on FIFA and UEFA.

The Russian teams were expelled from the competition on 28 February until further notice following the country’s invasion of Ukraine. FIFA and UEFA did not give their legal reasons.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said “a decision on the appeal is expected in the coming days”.

Russia’s men’s national team was to play Poland in the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoffs on 24 March. Poland has refused Russia to play in the match. The winner of that match would have played the winner of the game between Sweden and the Czech Republic in the next round, but they also declined to play against the Russians.

The CAS said that Russian appeals against FIFA and UEFA include Polish, Swedish and Czech federations, as well as several other national federations in Europe.
