Former Olympian Tahir Zaman urges Sindh to set up Hockey Center of Excellence

KARACHI: Former Olympian and International Hockey Federation (FIH) master trainer and teacher Tahir Zaman urged the Sindh government to set up a center of excellence to groom players and produce quality coaches so that Pakistan can lose its game in the sport. “The need of the hour is to create a center for the youth to polish their skills in line with the latest technology,” Tahir said during the certificate distribution ceremony of the three-day coach workshop at the Karachi Hockey Association (KHA) ground. next day.

The 52-year-old former Inside Wright said the provincial government, along with the education department, should identify under-14 talent and offer them cash and kind incentives, in addition to sending the best players abroad to perform.

Tahir, who has represented Pakistan in three Olympics, so many World Cups and two, said, “Hockey has completely changed and the direction of coaching has also been modified from boring camps and a young man from mobile phone to hockey. It needs to be attractive.” Asian Games told Dawn.

A native of Gojra, Tahir blamed the authorities for the lack of attention to the education of trainers for the decline of Pakistan’s golden age.

Tahir, who retired after the 1998 World Cup, joined the FIH panel as a coach and teacher and later as head coach, assistant coach and consultant on various occasions, in addition to serving several overseas teams. Served the national senior and junior hockey teams.

With 225 international matches under his belt and 136 goals to his credit, Tahir reveals that a good teacher produces good students.

He appreciated the KHA for conducting the Coach Workshop. The keynote speaker focused on various topics including modern terminology, skill development, planning and strategy with the help of videos and practical demonstrations and asked questions afterwards. About 110 participants including women participated in the workshop.

Secretary Sports Sindh Akhtar Inayat Bhurgari was also present.
