Roast of Tom Brady epitomized what comedy should be, nothing was off-limits

In today’s social climate, it is rare to see an entire group of people completely ignore the “rules” set by an angry mob in order to create true comedy. But that’s what has made “The Greatest Roast of All-Time: Tom Brady” one of the best American comedy shows of the last five years.

Was the show awkward at times? it was. Were there any terrible demonstrations? Were there. Would it have been more enjoyable without having to labor for three-plus hours? Perhaps.

Yes, it was long. But the results of doing the show live made it worthwhile. Why? Because there are constantly angry producers in Hollywood or on netflix I didn’t get a chance to edit out the “offensive jokes”, which no doubt incited the “I have a pretty good sense of humor, but that kind of humor isn’t funny” crowd.

To be fair to that group, I didn’t see much of a reaction to this incident. Granted, this is a Netflix special and it should pick up the pace once it hits the platform. Live events aren’t what they used to be, so there’s still time.

However, perhaps this is a sign that American society is returning to its best form. One where people understand jokes for what they are: jokes. At its core, comedy is meant to be offensive.

Even the usual “my mother-in-law is a monster” bits are rooted in making someone the butt of the joke.

But “Roast of Tom Brady” It went deeper than that. There were jokes about murder, suicide, gay people, transgender people, black people, white people, Jewish people, Democrats, Republicans, mentally handicapped people… no one was spared. And we all laughed. It’s a good thing. We need more of this.

“The Roast of Tom Brady” may have brought comedy back into American society.

One of the most important acts of the night was a comedian named Tony Hinchcliffe. I have to admit that I wasn’t familiar with them before the roast. But on Sunday night he took to that stage without any fear and the results speak for themselves.

Some of his one-liners were great – even if you can’t tell him this week at your corporate job. If you do this, you’ll probably have to whisper, and you’ll really have to trust your coworker.

He came out of the gate firing, starting with one of the most common topics of the night: Kevin Hart is short. Another play-out bit, but you have to play hits on these things. But Hinchcliffe managed to weave Aaron Hernandez’s suicide into a joke about Kevin Hart’s height.

“whole night, [Kevin Hart] He’s using the stool that Aaron Hernandez pulled out from under him.”

Again, I had no preconceived notions about Hinchcliffe. But I immediately realized that this man was not here to mess around or care about people’s feelings.

“Tom Brady is a patriot, which is amazing because he looks like a Confederate fag.”

Turns out, he was just warming up.

“Jeff [Ross] He’s so Jewish he only watches football for the coin toss.”

Then, he took aim at DEI with a joke directed at a relatively-unknown comedian named Sam Jay.

“Sam J is here, a fat, African-American, gay…by putting him here, Netflix checked a lot of boxes.”

But there are so many good jokes that they can’t be written in full. Here’s a supercut of their set,

In a strange twist, it was Julian Edelman who brought some of the most offensive material to the Tom Brady roast.

Gronk, Julian Edelman and Sean O'Malley

Of course, comedians brought comedy and offensive material. Jeff Ross came out in an OJ Simpson jersey and said he just met Aaron Hernandez in hell.

Nikki Glaser says Rob Gronkowski keeps ‘downs’ in touchdowns…’special’ on special teams… [and] The ‘tard’ in Rob Gronkowski is retarded.”

They were both great, but they also worked as comedians. The real surprise came when Brady’s former teammate Edelman took the stage. I wasn’t prepared for where he was going to go with his roast.

“Everyone always asks me how big Gronk’s d—- is,” Edelman said, introducing one of his jokes. “Don’t get me wrong, it gets the job done. But the other Patriots had a tough ending too…” he continued before taking a long pause.

“Now, he was hanged,” Edelman concluded to gasps from the crowd, a reference to Aaron Hernandez hanging himself in prison. dark! But, the truth is that it is a very funny joke.

Then, there was his joke about Jeff Ross that really impressed me. It was one of those “Can he really say that?” moment. That’s when I realized comedy is back, baby.

“Fun fact, Jeff and I are both Jewish. The difference is I’m the kind of Jew that makes people say, ‘Oh, you’re Jewish?'” Edelman said before taking a long pause and then Started from.

“Jeff Ross is the kind of Jew who inspires people to join Hamas.”

Even Tom Brady wasn’t afraid to “go there” during the Roast.

As all roasts do, the event concluded with Tom Brady getting a chance to expose himself to the heat for three hours. He had some good zingers, but the one that really showed that no one on this panel cared about being canceled was his brilliant 9/11 joke.

I can’t believe I just wrote that Tom Brady had a “brilliant 9/11 joke.” If that doesn’t tell you that comedy is back, I don’t know what will.

“Like the rest of America, I will always remember where I was that fateful day in September 2001, when tragically…” Brady began, as the entire crowd sat in worry, wondering where he was going.

“Those two jets hit Drew Bledsoe.”

Humanity and fortune restored in American society! There were too many great jokes to list them all, and some of them were extremely “offensive”. Of course, I don’t mean that I was angry, but rather that people who make a living being angry probably were.
