The transport committee today voted to reopen Wellington Street before March 1, putting in new infrastructure including a temporary bike lane and finding temporary closures for events.

The decision will be brought to the wider city council for a vote in early February.

Last year on February 23 the road was formally closed until the end of 2022, days after the week-long convoy demonstration was approved.

Some councilors want to see longer-term plans discussed before spring, saying today the road could become a pedestrian-only zone and it would be a step backwards to return to the status quo it was before last winter.
