After eight years of service, Waterloo Regional Police Chief Brian Larkin Will officially change his badge on July 3, leaving his position to join the RCMP.

Larkin spent 31 years in uniform, primarily with Waterloo, but also served as chief of police in Guelph, before taking over the reins in the region.

Nearing his final day, Larkin issued a letter to the community, expressing kindness to both the citizens and other members of the Waterloo Service.

“In the last eight years as your Chief of Police, I have witnessed tremendous growth in the Waterloo area,” he wrote.

“While people and priorities change, one thing that will not change is the service’s ongoing vision to create a better, stronger, safer and more equitable Waterloo region for all.”

He also took some time to introduce the man who will be temporarily stuffing his shoes while the Police Services Board is looking for a replacement.

“While saying goodbye is not easy, I leave it to know that this community is in great hands under the tremendous leadership of your police service,” Larkin wrote.

“Please join me in welcoming John Goodman as the new Acting Chief of Police. Acting Chief Goodman’s contribution to law enforcement and his outstanding service to the Waterloo area will lead to a successful transition in the coming months until a new Chief of Police is elected.” period will be ensured.

The board says it has hired a search firm to replace Larkin, who has been chief since 2014 after coming to Guelph.

No timetable has been given so far as to when this search will be completed.
