Responding to Texas School Shooting, MSNBC Guest Claims GOP Sacrifices Kids to ‘God of Gun Ownership’

On Friday night in MSNBC’s The ReadOut, author and critic of Christian fundamentalism Frank Schaefer used Terrible School Shooting in Uvalde, Texas To differentiate the GOP as a party dominated by evangelists who sacrifice children to “Moloch” like the pagan religions of the Old Testament.

Host Joy Reid inspired her guest by mentioning the “paradox” claimed when conservatives advocate for abortion restrictions but refuse to pursue gun restrictions.

Reed said, “You know, the thing is, there’s a weird mix of fatalism, well, when it comes to things like abortion, ‘Well, you know, if you get raped and get pregnant,’ It’s just God putting the baby. The world and you can’t have an abortion,’ and, by the way, believing the laws prevent abortion.”

He claimed, “When it comes to guns, ‘Well, you know, if it happens, it just happens. It’s the same, but you can’t have any laws.’ He had a paradox to me.”

Schaefer responded by saying that this happens “once you are in the grip of a conspiracy theory and somehow the world is turned against you, continuity is not your strong side.”

“It is a Christian nationalist movement, a White Christian Nationalist Movement,He added, “These people are really inconsistent on purpose, so they won’t vote for something as simple as baby formula being offered by the government. They will not vote for paid parental leave. They will not vote for the Child Tax Credit, which lifted millions of children out of poverty.”

Schaefer then fell into the deep end, equating evangelical Christians Child-sacrifice cultures of old, “So, the fact of the matter is that they are now on par with pagan religions which are believed to have eroded the Hebrew faith in biblical times and fought as they sacrificed children to Moloch and others. ”, he announced.

He had not been there. He continued, “The NRA is a gun-worshipping cult that sacrifices American children to the god of gun ownership. They are just as bad as everything that has happened in this country, and they must be changed.”

He then linked evangelicals to this creed and declared, “And so when you look at evangelicals who have aligned themselves with it, it is as far from the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ as one can imagine. “
