Putin thanks church for supporting Ukraine invasion in Christmas message

President Vladimir Putin thanked the Russian Orthodox Church for the support his war in ukraine It marked the first Orthodox Christmas as he launched his armies on a full-scale invasion, a conflict he cast as a holy war of sorts against a decadent West.

At a midnight service in the Kremlin’s Annunciation Cathedral, Russian state television showed Mr Putin crossing himself several times with priests before coverage cut to a public service at the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.
