PU Senate Election: Results of Heads of Departments withheld by HC, results of Professors declared

Panjab University on Friday declared the results of the Senate elections for professors of all its affiliated arts colleges. However, the results of the Senate election for heads of departments have been withheld in accordance with the directions of the High Court, which wanted the results to be presented first in a sealed envelope before being made public. The sealed envelope with the result will now be presented in the court on Sunday.

Voting was held on Wednesday for both the Heads of Departments and Professors.

As per the order passed by the HC, a result has been withheld after a petition was presented before the court by a voter who claimed his right to vote for the election of the Heads of Department Constituency. In the case, the court had held that the petitioner should be allowed to cast his vote and both his vote and the result of the election should be kept in a sealed cover and not declared before being produced before the court on the next hearing. Eight out of 15 who were in the fray for the Professors’ constituency – Inderpal, HS Dua, Kamal Sharma, Shaminder Sandhu, Jagdeep Kumar, Jagdish Chander, Jagtar Singh and Tarun Ghai – managed to come out as winners.

There are 11 candidates in the fray with a total of 2432 voters for the selection of heads of art colleges of PU. elections held across Chandigarh And Punjab on Wednesday recorded 96 per cent voter turnout for Heads of Affiliated Arts Colleges’ Constituency and 91 per cent for Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors of Affiliated Arts Colleges’ Constituencies.

Meanwhile, the date for the election of faculties, which was earlier scheduled to be held on 23 August, was postponed till late Friday night till 1 September. The reason for the postponement was not immediately clear.

The university has seen at least one major protest over the past week over the delay in holding Senate elections for registered graduates in another constituency – the largest constituency for PU Senate elections.
