IG Punjab takes notice of second woman harassment incident in Lahore on Independence Day

Punjab Inspector General of Police Inam Ghani on Friday took note of the harassment of a woman traveling in a rickshaw in Lahore on Independence Day and directed the capital city Police Officer (CCPO) Ghulam Mahmood Dogar to submit a report of the incident.

According to a tweet by the official account of Punjab Police, they also issued orders to identify and arrest the suspect through safe city cameras.

Earlier today, a video of the incident was shared widely on social media, sparking outrage among citizens.

The video shows the woman traveling in the back of a Qingqi rickshaw, known as Chingchi, surrounded by men on motorcycles, some of whom were catcalling her. While the woman had her face turned to the other side, a man suddenly jumped on Chingchi and tried to kiss the woman, who was left visibly shaken.

In the FIR, the complainant said that she, along with six accomplices, was making a video near Minar-e-Pakistan on Independence Day, when around 300 to 400 people “attacked us”.

He said that he and his associates tried hard to escape from the crowd. Sensing the situation, the security guard of the park opened the gate of the enclosure around Minar-e-Pakistan, the FIR quoted him as saying.

“However, the crowd was huge and people were crossing the fence and coming towards us. People were pushing and pulling me to such an extent that they tore my clothes. Many people tried to help me. But the crowd was too much and they kept throwing me in the air,” she said.
