One placard read, “The population’s government is against me.” Another banner read, “Housing, Livelihood, Hope.” Some protesters carried rainbow flags.
The protest was led by leftists and Arab members of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset. They argue that the plans proposed by the new cabinet will hamper the judicial system and widen social gaps.
Left-wing protesters denounced Justice Minister Yariv Levin, who on Wednesday unveiled the government’s long-delayed overhaul of the judicial system aimed at weakening the country’s highest court.
Critics accused the government of declaring war on the legal system, saying the plan would uphold Israel’s system of checks and balances and undermine its democratic institutions by giving absolute power to the new governing coalition.
Protesters also called for peace and coexistence between the country’s Jewish and Arab residents.
