Protest outside Sumul Dairy Plant in Surat after tempo driver’s murder

Hundreds of tempo drivers working with Sumul Dairy protested on Saturday in front of a dairy plant in Surat over the killing of a driver by another driver on Friday evening.

The matter was resolved after the dairy officials assured the workers a compensation amount of Rs. 12 lakh to the family members of the victim on humanitarian grounds.

According to Mahidharpura police, the incident took place on Friday evening when tempo driver Sunil Gupta (30), a resident of Milindnagar slum in front of Sumul Dairy, reached the parking area of ​​Sumul Dairy complex carrying milk bags. agents in the city

There was a heated argument between Sunil and another milk tempo driver Ravi Shukla over parking the vehicle.

Police said Ravi Shukla, who started working as a tempo driver on contract for the past one month, allegedly stabbed Sunil and fled the spot.

The tempo drivers informed the security staff and officials of Sumul Dairy about the incident and took Sunil Gupta to Kiran Hospital, where he was declared brought dead on Friday night.

Sunil’s elder brother Suresh Gupta had lodged a complaint against Ravi Shukla at Mahidharpura police station late on Friday night. Ravi was arrested on Saturday.

On Saturday morning, more than 100 tempo drivers and their family members working in Sumul Dairy entered the Sumul Dairy premises along with Sunil’s relatives and staged a dharna demanding compensation from the dairy officials and strict punishment to the accused.


Dairy officials informed Mahidharpura police, who reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

Mahidharpura police inspector MV Kikani said, “We have registered a case of murder of Sunil Gupta and arrested the accused this afternoon.”

Mansingh Patel, chairman of Sumul Dairy, said, “We have decided to give a compensation of Rs 12 lakh to the family of the deceased tempo driver on humanitarian grounds. The deceased was working on contract for the last two years while the accused was working for the last one month.
