IIO officials said RCMP officers attempted to locate a man in alleged distress at a business in the 9900 block of 201st Street on Wednesday afternoon.
While police officers were inside the business, the man, who has been identified as an off-duty Surrey Police Service member, suffered “severe injuries that appear to have been self-inflicted,” IIO staff said. said in a release.
Later that person was declared brought dead.

Langley RCMP confirmed that the incident occurred at The Range Langley, a large indoor shooting range.
SPS confirmed that the man, who has not been identified, was suspended with pay orders in 2022 arising out of the allegations of breach of trust.
“My understanding was that this officer has been suspended with pay and (is) subject to investigation,” Surrey Police Service spokesman Ian McDonald said.
“This was a breach of trust investigation that was being fronted by the Surrey RCMP and carrying out its work through BC Prosecution Services.”

Police said the next of kin of the officer have been informed.
The IIO has started its investigation, and the initial investigation steps will seek to confirm whether police action or inaction may have played a role in the death.
