A Hamilton, Ontario, man has been charged with a grandpa scam event in Peterborough in January.
According to Peterborough Police ServiceOn January 23, a resident was contacted and told that his grandson had been arrested. The caller said $18,000 was needed for the boy’s release.

Police say the money was exchanged with a person before the victim realized it was a scam.
An investigation was launched and the fraud unit of the service identified a suspect. On Thursday, 16 February, he presented himself to Peterborough police.
Mohammed Mahmood, 26, of Hamilton, was arrested and charged with extortion, fraud over $5,000 and possession of the proceeds of a crime under $5,000
He was released on a recognizance and is due to appear in Peterborough court on March 8.

“The Peterborough Police Service is releasing names as there could be further victims in relation to the large number of calls linked to the grandparent scam in January,” police said on Friday.
