A pet dog helped a family catch a thief in their house and recover stolen goods in south Kolkata’s Kalighat area, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place at Jadu Bhattacharya Lane near Kalighat fire station, which is just a short distance from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence, he said.

Police said that at around 4 am on Friday, a thief broke into the house by breaking the latch of the main door and was eating food from the fridge by stealing some items.

Seeing someone present there, the lady of the house woke up and made noise. Hearing his scream, the rest also woke up.

Police said Prasenjit Chakraborty, a young member of the family, tried to nab the thief, who was attacked with a knife.

Soon, their dog Rocky attacked the thief. The dog bit him and held on to his leg till the five-member family got hold of him. He then called up the police, who arrested the thief, an officer said.

“It is definitely a brave act. Preliminary investigation revealed that the thief, a vegetable vendor in the area, was hired by a neighbor of the family,” he said.

“The accused was trying to steal the gold ornaments worn by the deity of the house,” he said, adding that the neighbor has also been arrested.

Police said Prasenjit was attacked by a thief and was taken to SSKM Hospital where he received 35 stitches on his neck and shoulder.

He said that a case has been registered and investigation is going on.
