The Delhi Police on Saturday produced Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair before a court here in a case related to an “objectionable tweet” he posted against a Hindu deity in 2018 and served 14 days judicial custody. custody was sought.

At the end of his five-day custody, Zubair was produced before the court.

The police told Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarwaria that they no longer needed custodial interrogation.

During the brief hearing, Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastava also told the court that the police invoked new provisions of Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (Destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 35 of Foreign Contribution (Regulation). have done. ) Act – against Zubair.

After the application of the police, Zubair moved the bail application in the court on the ground that no further investigation was required.

The court is likely to hear the bail application soon.

Zubair’s lawyer Vrinda Grover told the court that the phone seized by the police was not from the time he had tweeted.

“The tweet is from 2018, the phone is the one I (Zubair) am currently using. I have not even denied the tweet,” she said.

Zubair was earlier booked under IPC sections 153 (abetment with intent to cause riot) and 295 (causing desecration to a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class).

Later, IPC section 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) was also invoked.
