Pakistan chases down a record run to beat Sri Lanka in Galle

Abdullah Shafiq and Babar Azam acted as Pakistan chased down a record 342-run target against Sri Lanka to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Pakistan had scored 331 for six, with Abdullah Shafiq on 154 and Mohammad Nawaz on 12 in Galle, where the most successful fourth innings chase by Sri Lanka against New Zealand in 2019 was 268 runs.

Left-arm spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya took four wickets for the hosts and is on the verge of an unprecedented feat of four consecutive five-wicket hauls in his first two Tests.

He took 12 wickets on debut, six in each innings, in a series-level Test win over Australia at the same venue last week.

Pakistan resumed the day at 222-3 and Sri Lanka soon used their remaining two umpire reviews, which included Jayasuriya in both calls.

Mohammad Rizwan opened the account of his day with a boundary off Ramesh Mendis and kept his positive intent in singles and two before Jayasuriya was dismissed lbw for 40.

A review did not save wicketkeeper-batsman Rizwan, who has come into the two-match series after a successful stint with English county Sussex.

Shafiq, who registered his second Test century on the fourth day to chase, has so far stood firm and played the role of anchor.
