Firefighters in Orillia, Ontario, are warning people sleeping outside about the dangers of keeping a heat source inside a tent after a fire temporary winter shelter went up in flames on Thursday night.

At around 7:40pm on Thursday, 9 February, Aurelia Fire responded to reports of a bush fire in an area off Atherley Road.

“It could be seen from the street. The flames were over the trees. So it was quite a big fire,” said Deputy Fire Chief Chris Ferry.

When crews entered the bush, Ferry said they found a tent-type structure covered with tarpaulins and a fire.

Ferry said he found two occupants at the scene, one of whom was attended to by paramedics.

“It appears that the fire started from the heating equipment that they had in this makeshift structure,” Ferry said.

“Our recommendations are always that if you have to live in that type of structure in the winter time to keep your heating and yourself and your cooking equipment inside the tent and away from[the walls]as they are a very Flammable structures.
