opinion | The January 6 Hearing Disappointed This Democrat

Count me as a Democrat disappointed with the way my party has responded to Donald Trump – with narratives that often turn out to be untrue. Two impeachments by members of the House failed because they were done on partisan grounds.

The House hearing on January 6 provided an opportunity to carefully examine Mr. Trump’s activities. But it didn’t happen. Thursday’s opening statements from Chairman Benny Johnson and Republican Rep. Liz Cheney were more like prosecutors’ closing arguments than the introduction of a fact-finding investigation. Ms Cheney read aloud a statement from Mr Trump that was supposed to implore his followers to impeach him – but left as he told his followers: “Go home.”
