Sometimes it’s hard to tell whether President Biden and his strategists want Ukraine to win a defensive war against Russia, or just survive to sign a deal with much of its former territory under Russian control. This dilemma is returning to an issue as Russian forces make new military gains in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.

On Monday Russian troops entered the center of Severodnetsk, one of the last major Ukrainian strongholds in the Donbass, the country’s industrial hub. Advances followed a relentless artillery and rocket barrage on the city that resembled the destruction of Mariupol.
