Freezing weather caused a breach in the Splatsin First Nation’s reservoir near Enderby.

On Thursday, residents were told to fill and store water in case water service was cut off due to the fissure.

But luckily, the reservoir leak was quickly fixed.

However, the Vernon and District Performing Arts Center is still reeling from its event.

“It’s frustrating because we were just up and running. We’ve been really, really busy and so happy to be back after the pandemic,” said artistic director Erin Kennedy.

“It’s a disappointing blow but we will recover. We will make repairs and reopen soon.”

The center says it is not yet sure what caused the problem, but believes it is related to the fire suppression system and that this week’s cold snap may have played a role.

“The water was mainly in the platform area and loading bay, so we are in the process of drying it out. Once it dries out we will know the extent of the damage,” Kennedy said.

Theater is not alone. The owner of a local restoration company says it’s been a busy week, amid cooler temperatures.

Conan Eckert, owner of Total Restoration Services, said he has received calls from customers about frozen and cracked pipes.

Eckert has some tips for keeping your water system running when the temperatures drop.

He suggests making sure no hoses are attached to the outside of the house, keeping your home warm, opening cabinet doors under the sink, and possibly allowing cold water faucets to drip slowly so that stagnant water doesn’t build up in the lines. Avoid freezing.

Several shows at the Performing Arts Center have had to be moved or postponed.

Ticket holders will be notified directly of upcoming postponed shows.

The theater is hoping it will be back to regular programming within a few weeks.
