Lafayette Judge Michelle Odinet has sent a letter to the Louisiana Supreme Court announcing her resignation as a Lafayette City Court judge.
Judge Odinet’s attorney Dan Ciolino filed the letter on Odinet’s behalf on Friday, December 31.
Odinet’s letter was sent to Chief Justice John Weimar and said she would step down effective immediately.

“I take full responsibility for the hurtful words used to describe the person who broke into my home. I’m sorry for the pain I’ve caused my community and I apologize to you, because my The words did not promote public confidence and integrity to the judiciary.
After much contemplation and prayer, and to facilitate healing within the community, I hereby resign as Judge of the Lafayette City Court with immediate effect. I am sending a copy of this letter to the Secretary of State and hope that a special election may be scheduled to fill the vacancy created by my resignation.
Odinet was on unpaid leave after an attempted burglary at her home after video footage was circulated online.
The video shows a group of people monitoring the house. A woman’s voice can be heard saying the N-word and comparing the suspect to a roach.
Odinet said in a statement at the time, that she was given a sedative and had “zero memory of the video and the disturbing language used during it.”
Retired Opelousse City Judge Vanessa Harris will be seated as Judge Pro Temporal of Division A, Lafayette City Court, for the period from December 17, 2021 to February 28, 2022, subject to completing any unfinished business, according to LA Supreme . Court. see that story here
