October 13, 1981, forty years ago: Anti-Corruption Campaign

Five organisations, including Citizens for Democracy and Lok Sevak Sangh, founded by Jayaprakash Narayan, decided at a meeting in New Delhi to launch a pan-India campaign against corruption. This was on the occasion of Jayaprakash Narayan’s birth anniversary on Sunday. In the meeting a resolution was passed on Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to remove AR Antulay from the poet of Maharashtra Chief Minister. Other organizations that sponsored the anti-corruption movement were the People’s Union for Civil Liberties, the Delhi Voters’ Council and the Hindustan Movement.

The government has said that it was not involved, at this stage, in the denial of visa by China to Arunachal Assembly Speaker TL Rajkumar. Rajkumar is a member of a delegation of Indian parliamentarians who are to visit Beijing later this month to attend a conference on population control. Responding to questions, an official spokesperson said the government was, however, aware that the Chinese government had refused visa to the prince. The delegation has been asked to take up the matter with the United Nations which has sponsored the conference. The spokesman said that UN officials are in touch with the Chinese government in this regard.

Eighteen Egyptian officials with “radical religious tendencies” have been dismissed from the army after Sadat was killed by Muslim extremists, official sources said. The dismissal was said to be the first step by the government to purge the army of religious extremists. “Eighteen military officers have been posted to civilian posts because of their staunch religious tendencies,” said a statement issued by official sources.
