What makes a great television series is often the subject of much debate.
But to be considered one of the best of the 21st century, it seems that laughter is something many experts can do without.
In a poll of over 200 television experts from 43 countries to compile a list of the 100 greatest TV series since 2000, only two comedies made it to the top ten.

The show, which ran from 2002 to 2008 and starred British actors Dominic West and Idris Elba, came out on top.
Nearly a quarter ranked the series first and 48 percent listed it in their top ten, based on the Baltimore drug scene.
According to a list compiled by BBC Culture, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s comedy Fleabag ranked fourth, with nearly 40 percent of experts placing it in their top ten.

Mad Men was voted the second biggest show, with crime series Breaking Bad third and Game of Thrones fifth.
The latest series in the top ten is Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You, which was released last year and peaked at number six.
The Office UK, starring Ricky Gervais, was ranked ninth – the only other comedy in the top ten. The US office was down significantly at 39.

Other top ten shows include The Leftovers, The American and Succession. Crown was at number 16, Sherlock at number 25 and police drama Line of Duty at number 27 and further down. Downton Abbey was pictured at 36, while Luther was seated at 95.
And there were several entries from the last two years, when TV viewing has increased as a result of the covid lockdown.
Normal People released in April last year was the 84th. Small Ax finished 51st, while The Queen’s Gambit took 100th place. Kate Winslet’s Mare of Easttown finished 66th.

English was the primary language in 92 of the top 100 shows. And 79 programs were created by men, compared to 11 programs created by women.
