An unusual winter storm of rain, snow and high winds hit New Brunswick on Friday, causing multiple cancellations and delays.

Environment Canada forecast up to 40 centimeters of snow could fall in northern areas, while communities in the south are bracing for up to 40 millimeters of rain.

on Twitter, New Brunswick RCMP Said travel was not recommended between kilometer markers 1 and 79 on the Trans-Canada Highway, due to weather conditions.

In St John, incessant rain prompted police to warn of “localized flooding”, and that driving around barricades is an offense under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Francophone and Anglophone school districts across the province closed their doors ahead of the season.

New Brunswick Community College, the University of St. Thomas and the University of New Brunswick closed most of their campuses.

Université de Moncton delayed the opening of its Moncton campus and closed its Shippegan and Edmondston campuses.

Public transit services remained in service in Moncton, Fredericton and St. John’s.

Canada Post issued a release noting that most residents would not receive their delivery on Friday.

Red Delivery Service Alerts – issued for communities where delivery has been suspended – have been issued for Bathurst, Campbellton, Edmondston, Fredericton, Miramichi, Moncton, Oromocto and St. John’s.

Residents of St. Stephens, where a Yellow Delivery Service Alert has been issued, were told that delivery will be attempted, but delays are expected.

As of Friday afternoon, Environment Canada weather warnings remain in place for most of New Brunswick. These warnings include freezing rain, rain and winter storms.
