National Education Policy 2020 discussed on performance evaluation of school teachers

The first round of deliberations for the National Occupational Standards for Teachers (NPST) under the National Education Policy 2020, which will decide the performance appraisal of school teachers, was chaired by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat on Thursday in Gandhinagar.

Also, training and mentoring of teachers under the National Consultative Mission (NMM) of NEP was discussed during the Open House Forum.
Academics, subject experts, academicians, policy makers, school principals, representatives of private school management, government and private school teachers from across the state participated in the day-long open discussion under the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). On the need for 360 degree assessment for school teachers which will be based on their performance rather than their tenure or seniority.

With a total participation of 120, the open house discussion on “National Professional Standards for Teachers” and “National Advisory Mission” of National Education Policy organized by Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IIT) Gandhinagar is the first round of discussion under Western in Gujarat. region, said Harshad Patel, vice-chancellor of IITE.

“The standards will include performance evaluation for each rank which will be done from time to time. NPST will also determine teacher career management including tenure, increment, promotion and other recognition. Promotion and increment shall not be on the basis of length of tenure or seniority but only on the basis of such assessment. Professional standards will be reviewed and revised nationally in 2030 and then revised every ten years based on rigorous empirical analysis of the system’s efficacy,” states NEP 2020.

In order to inspire the best and brightest to enter the teaching profession and empower teachers and help them to perform their jobs as effectively as possible, the National Policy on Education has mandated the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) to set a professional standard. has been made mandatory in a reorganized form. Body (PSSB) to develop National Occupational Standards (NPST) for Teachers.

From teacher education to role of teachers at all levels, career management, special education to compulsory professional development, these will be addressed under NPST.

After discussion, the draft prepared will go into the public domain for review, after which a guideline for Gujarat is to be prepared.
