New Delhi, July 2

The India Meteorological Department said on Saturday that the southwest monsoon has covered the entire country as it brought seasonal rains in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

“The southwest monsoon has made an onset over the country on Saturday, six days before the normal date of July 8,” the Met Office said.

The southwest monsoon started over Kerala on May 29, three days before the normal date of June 1.

However, the progress of the southwest monsoon, which is crucial for the agriculture-based economy, has been sluggish, as the country recorded an eight per cent deficit in rainfall.

Meteorologists expect the monsoon to pick up pace in the coming months and have predicted well-distributed rainfall in July. with pti input
