Man charged with murder after single vehicle collision in The Blue Mountains: OPP – Barrie | globalnews.ca

A 38-year-old man has been charged with murder following a one-vehicle collision in The Blue Mountains, Ontario.

Ontario Provincial Police said that on January 26 at approximately 5:55 p.m., a gray Mitsubishi Outlander SUV was traveling north on Arrowhead Road, just south of Highway 26, when it left the road.

Police said the vehicle continued down an embankment and caught fire when it stopped.

According to the police, a dead person was found inside the vehicle.

Authorities have identified the victim as Ashley Schwalm, 40, of Collingwood.

Police arrested James Schwalm, 38, of Collingwood on Thursday.

He has been charged with second degree murder and disrespect of a dead body.

A source told Global News that the accused was a fire captain with Brampton Fire and Emergency Services.

In a statement Friday, the City of Brampton said it was made aware that a Fire and Emergency Services employee had been arrested and charged by the OPP with second-degree murder and another.

“This is an ongoing investigation, and the case has not yet been proven in court,” the statement read.

The city said the employee was “notified of his termination for cause in accordance with the collective agreement and the Fire Safety and Prevention Act.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends affected, and we are mourning the loss during this difficult time,” the statement said. “As this matter is before the courts, the City cannot provide further comment.”

Police said that the accused was kept on bail for trial.
