Mamta to start Goa election campaign, BJP-TMC in poster fight

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee Arrived in Goa on Thursday for a three-day visit – her first visit to the coastal state since the TMC announced last month that it would contest the February-March 2022 assembly elections.

Banerjee’s visit is expected to kick-start her party’s election campaign in the state. New members are expected to join the party on Friday.

Before his arrival, hoardings bearing “Jai Shri Ram” were put up at several places in Goa, next to the hoardings of Goa TMC were hoardings with the catch phrase “Goenchi Navi Sakal” (Goa’s new dawn) . BJP Leader Amit Malviya tweeted pictures of the hoardings and wrote, “Mamata Banerjee’s reputation of being anti-Hindu in Bengal has taken her to Goa, where she is being welcomed with oversized posters of Jai Shri Ram.”

The Goa Trinamool Congress filed a complaint with the Panaji police station that “goons” vandalized, damaged and vandalized party posters and hoardings across the state. The complaint said the “goons” were making “vulgar, derogatory, false and fabricated” comments about Banerjee’s life. It named six people who had shared pictures of damaged hoardings on social media.

The complaint said a vehicle carrying Banerjee’s posters and banners was targeted on Thursday by an “unruly mob” of eight to ten people, who damaged and burnt the posters.

“This is not our culture. This is not Goan culture. The people of Goa have their own culture, we are definitely courteous towards women, what I found here is a culture of hatred, intolerance, vengeance and vengeance which is not favorable to the people of Goa and Goa,” said TMC National Vice President Luizinho Faleiro said.

On Wednesday, Goa BJP president Sadanand Tanawade said: “The people tearing the posters are not from the BJP. There are many people in Goa who love Modiji, Amit Shahji and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant very much… this is just a glimpse. In Kolkata, they have created an atmosphere of violence and fear, and they are trying to bring it here… We don’t need to tear down their posters.”

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said, “I condemn politics of such a low level…no one should stoop to this level…”
