Local couple cheering for Christmas on two wheels

WADSWORTH, Ohio — Instead of a list, Patrick Weimar of Wadsworth is checking sticky notes twice.

“It could be a home visit, or a day care visit, or a senior center,” he said. “I note where we are going and at what time they like us there.”

Patrick and his wife Sue are helping spread the joy of Christmas to you and me on a two-person bicycle.

“We just want to make people smile,” Patrick said.

They are sleeping on retirement. The two retired the same day—Patrick by trade and Sue from teaching kindergarten—and bought a tandem bike the next day. They love the exercise and togetherness it provides.

During the first pandemic Christmas, the couple couldn’t stand the fact that the kids couldn’t see Santa due to the COVID lockdown. So, they decided to bring Santa to them safely.

He dressed up as Santa Claus and an elf, rode his tandem bike, and began making drive-by visits.

They wanted to remain anonymous, but like best things word got out and they were back in the saddle again this year, traveling nearly a hundred miles a week.

They call their tandem bike Rudolph because it is red and lit with red lights to make them visible. They ride at all hours of the day and in all kinds of weather.

New this year, they’ve added a beautiful sleigh that flashes behind Rudolph. It was built for him free of charge by a neighbor, who generously devoted his time and talent to further enhance his visits.

“We were blown away,” he said.

Patrick and Sue say the Christmas tour is the best gift they’ve ever had.

“There will be a lot of believers — whether they are 3 years old or 90 — we call them believers because they just love Santa,” said Patrick as they ride through the neighborhood.

“It brings back the Christmas spirit for everyone,” Sue said. “They can see Christmas through the eyes of a child with Santa and the fun and playfulness, and that’s all.”

They say they love to live all the smiles and waves again when they get back home and start planning their next trip.
