Live Updates: Russia Attacks Ukraine and Vladimir Putin

Makarev, Ukraine (from Telegram)

A large area of Makarev, a village about 30 miles west of Kyiv, suffered extensive damage from apparent Russian air raids.

CNN geolocated and verified the authenticity of photos posted on social media on Saturday that showed major damage to apartment complexes, schools and a medical facility.

A stark image of Makariev shows a large hole in the north wall of an apartment building. Many of the buildings in the photographs show damage to their northern facades, evidence pointing to military attacks that affected them as being Russian.

Several hundred feet to the east of that apartment building, a kindergarten also caused considerable damage.

Smoke could still be seen rising from the building, with the roof completely collapsed and the windows blown out.

The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly claimed that they are not targeting civilians.

In another apartment building to the west of the school, the roof and several upper-floor houses have been destroyed in another photo.

A fire is raging at the Adonis-Makariv Medical and Diagnostic Center, just south of the school. The street in front of it is littered with rubble and the windows in the middle have been blown away.

A photograph taken on the street in front of the center showed that the debris in front of it is the remains of the north-facing front of the building.

A large pothole was noticed on the road, near the center of Makariv, just west of the school and medical center. The medical center can be seen in flames in the background. Next to that pit, another photo shows a residential building hit with a grocery store on the ground floor.

A cultural center in the heart of the city, which also houses government and police offices, has come under attack. Part of the building was destroyed and a structure on the roof was cut from some sort of warship.

“Victory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes” was written on a large sign in front of the building.

To the south of central Makariv, a preschool also suffered significant damage. Windows have been blown out and parts of the roof appear to be damaged.
