Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Thursday approved an ordinance to restore OBC reservation in rural local bodies.

The approval comes a day after the state cabinet sent a revised proposal to the governor’s office after raising issues on its previous proposal.

Last week, months after the Supreme Court scrapped the OBC quota in local bodies, the cabinet decided to bring in an ordinance to restore quotas in addition to reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) within the 50 per cent reservation limit. had decided. in rural local bodies.

However, the Governor sent the file back to the government, raising the legal issue of bringing this ordinance to the notice of the Supreme Court. On Wednesday, the state cabinet amended the proposal and sent it back for the governor’s approval.

“We are grateful to the governor for approving the ordinance sent by the cabinet. Whenever Raj Bhavan has any doubts, it confirms with the state government. Similarly, we also addressed his point and sent back the proposal.

An official of the Urban Development Department said that he will soon send a proposal to the Governor to bring an ordinance to restore the OBC quota in urban local bodies.

The state cabinet has also decided to make similar provisions to restore OBC reservation in urban local bodies such as municipal corporations and city councils on the lines of rural local bodies.
