Typically, during the winter, traffic management includes a 30-minute stoppage between 9am and 3pm, and 8pm to 10pm in the evening and also a 10pm to 7am stoppage.
The Kicking Horse Canyon Project was established to improve safety, widen and realign the highway. This would inevitably require traffic disruptions and sometimes the closure of entire highways.
The highway carries more than 10,000 vehicles daily during the summer, with up to 30 percent of traffic being commercial vehicles carrying millions of dollars of freight.
The province said the three phases of work have converted the 21-kilometer narrow, winding, two-lane highway into a four-lane, 100-kph standard.
The construction of the fourth and final phase to cover the remaining – and most difficult – 4.8 km is expected to be substantially complete in winter 2023-24.
The project is part of a wider Highway 1 – Kamloops to Alberta – four laning program.
