Joe Root says ‘clear on how to reach’ after Ashes start at Gabba

England Captain Joe Root said his team is clear on “how to approach” as the much-anticipated Ashes series begins at a ceremony at the Gabba in Brisbane on Sunday.

There is a bit more clarity in Root’s squad as rivals Australia named their starting eleven two days before the start of the first Test at the Gabba on Wednesday in a surprise move.

The Ashes launch event was attended by both England’s pair of Mark Wood, Ollie Pope and Australia’s vice-captain along with rival captains, Root and newly-appointed Pat Cummins of Australia. Steve Smith and Cameron Green.

Root said England would gain confidence from India’s win over Australia at the Gabba earlier this year and “hold on their strength”.

India’s win at the Gabba was hosts Australia’s first loss in 35 years in Brisbane.

“Credit to India, he played exceptionally well throughout the series. And, in many ways, set a good example for any touring team to come and play here,” said the England captain.

England last won an Ashes series in Australia in 2011 – a team that also included the fast bowling duo of James Anderson and Stuart Broad.
