Minneapolis (WCCO) — This cold weather is good for a few things, like making ice for fishing. But as WCCO found out, this year – it’s complicated.
While the temperatures are low enough to make snow, the conditions are not as good as they might seem.

Jeff Heinrich is the owner ice fishing warriors, an icefishing cabin rental service on Lake Minnetonka.
“It’s so deceiving, a lot of people will come out and think they can just drive wherever they want and they should check the snow wherever they go,” he said.

He blames the abundance of snow for the lack of snow.
“It’s insulating and that’s because cold air is trying to get through that ice,” he said.
Heinrich measured 10 inches of an ice-covered stretch of ice on Lake Minnetonka. Just a few feet away, the area where the snow was plowed had 16 inches of snow.

Heinrich says that despite the deep cold, it’s important to check for any snow before heading out.
