‘It’s something I’ll never forget’: Parents, coaches react after gunfire near a minor league tournament in Wilson ::WRAL.com

Gunfire on Sunday forced the cancellation of baseball day one in Wilson.

The video shows players speeding down the field at the Gillette Athletic Complex.

Someone was shooting nearby.

Witnesses told WRAL News that the Wilson City Little League on Corbett Ave. Burt was holding a tournament at the Gillette Athletic Complex when shots began to sound and the crowd scattered.

It was at the bottom of the fourth inning, and Bull City was about to take the Little League mound when it happened.

“I heard the whistle. I heard the zoom, the zoom, the zoom,” said Chris Breslin, one of the coaches on the field. “I heard three of them.”

Players, coaches and people in the stands started running, ducking for cover or simply falling to the ground.

“You see stories on the news all the time, and you’ve seen pictures where everyone drops everything and just runs,” said parent Lindsay Stephenson. “Watching it for the first time today, it’s something I’ll never forget or get over.

“Today has changed the rest of my life.”

No one was injured when the shots stopped, but a shell cover was found on the ground and the rear window of a van in the parking lot was shot.

Police said it was not an active shooter situation but is being investigated as a shootout in the city limits.

“We think it was very deliberate because one of the bullets hit the ground or hit the ground,” Stephenson said. “There was a proof marker. A few feet away stood a little boy.”

Stephenson was in the stands and her husband, coach Brad Stephenson, was behind home plate.

There’s no word on whether the baseball tournament will be rescheduled.

And now, coaches are trying to find a way to encourage a group of fearful Little Leaguers.

“We don’t want this to be the last thing [the kids are] Was thinking about this summer or about baseball or teams or any of those things,” Breslin said. “I think the coaches, administrators and commissioners are trying to be creative and try to do right by the kids. trying.”
