Inter-religious marriage: Tension in Agra locality after woman’s death

Communal tension prevailed in an Agra area on Saturday, a day after a woman allegedly died by suicide.

According to police, the victim Varsha (22) had an inter-caste marriage with a local man Faheem (26) a year ago and was living away from the city.

The victim’s family alleges that she did not die of suicide, but her in-laws are torturing her.

Agra SSP Sudhir Kumar Singh said that the police have registered an FIR against Faheem and four members of his family under Section 304-B (dowry murder) of the IPC at Shahganj police station on Saturday.

“We had received information that a woman was found hanging inside her in-laws house. Police officials reached the spot and sent the body for postmortem,” said SSP Singh. In view of the tension in the area, police force was deployed from several police stations and the situation was brought under control.

Faheem and two family members have been arrested in the case.

Police said Faheem used to run an automobile repair shop in Agra. Police said that she and Varsha had a court marriage about a year ago and lived in Indore for some time.

According to the police, when they were about to take the body for post-mortem on Friday evening, the family, including Varsha’s brother Dushyant, refused to accept it. At this point, members of one group, which reportedly included some activists of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), reached there in support of the family and reportedly joined another community after a heated argument with Faheem’s relatives and neighbours.
