India’s new military recruitment system sparked protests, turmoil

NEW DELHI – Protesters set buses and trains on fire and damaged property across India, in protest against the government’s insistence that the new recruitment system will transform the country’s military.

Security has been tightened in several states in recent days since protests broke out after the government announced the change last week. Internet has been suspended in parts of Bihar, one of India’s poorest states, where the protests have been most damaging.
