According to a United Nations report published on Monday, India is on track to overtake China as the planet’s most populous country next year.

China and India were home to more than 1.4 billion people in 2022, according to a report by the Population Division of the United Nations’ Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

“India is projected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country during 2023,” the United Nations said. The Indian government census for 2011 put the country’s population at over 1.2 billion.
