State police said the 34-year-old mother, who has not been named, is said to have intentionally jumped after climbing over a railing on Goat Island in Niagara State Park at about 12.30 a.m. on February 12.

His body was found near the Cave of the Winds complex, which sits on the American side of the falls, spanning the border with Canada.

The 5-year-old boy was rescued and taken to Children’s Hospital at Buffalo with head injuries but the mother died and her body was airlifted from the bank. The boy underwent surgery and remained in critical condition until the next day.

In pictures obtained by DailyMail.com the man appears to be conscious as he is being loaded into an ambulance following the tragedy.

He was taken to a vehicle to be stabilized, and shortly afterwards loaded onto a helicopter for emergency treatment.
