Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said that workers affected by the ban on construction activities in the national capital will be provided financial assistance of Rs 5,000 each and his government will also compensate for the loss of minimum wages. He said that the Delhi government would organize special camps at construction sites in the city for the registration of laborers.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that the government has decided to ban construction and demolition activities following the Supreme Court order in this regard. The top court on Wednesday again put a stay on construction activities in Delhi-NCR till further orders.

The ban was lifted on Monday in view of the improvement in air quality and inconvenience caused to workers. “We have stopped construction activities and following all the orders and suggestions of the Supreme Court, the Delhi government is taking several steps to reduce pollution,” Kejriwal said.

He said an order has been issued and Rs 5,000 each is being deposited in the bank accounts of construction workers in Delhi. “We will also compensate them for the loss of their minimum wage. Many construction workers are not registered, for which camps will be set up at construction sites to get them registered.

Workers in Delhi are required to be registered with the Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board to receive government benefits.
