A’s family members 22-year-old youth dies in police custody Rejecting the theory of suicide of the police in this district of Uttar Pradesh, he has demanded justice and strict punishment to those responsible for his death.

The family has said that the police are showing a letter purportedly signed by the victim’s father giving a clean chit to the men in khaki, and alleged that it was obtained under duress.

Altaf’s uncle Abrar Ahmed, who died in police custody in Kasganj on Tuesday, told reporters here that the letter bearing the thumb impression of Altaf’s father has been “managed through police pressure”.

Speaking to reporters at the Press Club in Aligarh on Thursday night, Abrar said, “My brother is illiterate and has his thumb impression on a piece of paper at a time when he was in a state of shock.”

He said, “My brother is a broken man and can hardly walk and that is why I have come to Aligarh to speak on his behalf.”

Responding to a question, Abrar said that the Kasganj police has given an amount of Rs 5 lakh to a family member, but he is not aware of who was given the money as his brother is not in a position to speak.

“Our main demand is that the culprits should be given proper punishment as the theory that Altaf committed suicide by hanging himself is completely fabricated by the police,” he said.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students took out a protest march on the campus on Thursday and demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court.

While the victim’s family has alleged that he was killed by policemen on duty, police said he strangled himself using a string from the hood of his jacket in the washroom of the lock-up.
