Don’t succumb to pressure from politicians, seniors, CM Channi tells Punjab Police

Chief Minister of Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi On Friday, the police were asked not to succumb to pressure from politicians or their superiors while registering a case against any person. He said that the general concept of the force should be that of justice dispensing agency and asked the personnel to perform their duties with ethics and honesty.

He was speaking at an event organized at the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) campus in Jalandhar.

Channi said, “Sometimes there is political pressure, but a policeman, from the ‘munshi’ (head clerk) to the top level, should under no circumstances put anyone behind bars even for an hour, if he Innocent,” said Channi.

“I request you or you can take it as my order that no one should be booked illegally and you should listen to your heart whether you are doing justice or harassing any person. However, an accused should not be spared at any cost.”

He also advised that during checking drives on roads, police should not unnecessarily harass commuters, especially vehicles from other states if they have all the required documents.

Channi said, “Let them go because there should be honesty and transparency in our work so that people have an impression that Punjab Police is the department of justice.”

“Police should sort out the issues and they should get the government’s support for the right things,” he said.

Ahead of the state assembly elections, Channi announced re-introduction of uniform allowance for Punjab Police personnel, notification of free travel for police in public buses, exposure allowance for Bomb Disposal Squad personnel, per day for all Renovation of PAP Ground at a cost of Rs 1 crore, 250 vehicles for police, Rs 15 crore for the welfare of police personnel and setting up of Police Sanjh Kendras at two international airports at Amritsar and Mohali.
