Do you need a toothbrush as complex as a dishwasher? Perhaps.

nylah burton, 27, doesn’t only have one electric toothbrush—she has two. Three years ago on the recommendation of his dentist, the Chicago-based travel writer stopped using his manual brush. She decided to buy the $270 Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9500, a smart electric toothbrush. She was applying too much force to her teeth and has found that the pressure sensor on the Sonicare has helped her relax. “It made my gums stop bleeding,” she said.

Unfortunately, Ms. Burton found it impractical to carry her charger on the go. The solution turned out to be a second toothbrush from Quip, a direct-to-consumer startup, that operates with a replaceable AA battery. No heavy charger required.
