A Delhi court on Tuesday (March 15) booked former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam for his alleged inflammatory speeches in Delhi’s Jamia area in December 2019 and Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh in January. for treason and other charges. Fee. 13 of the Mischief and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The court had directed framing of charges on January 24, 2022. The court had rejected Sharjeel’s regular bail plea. The court has listed the matter for further hearing on March 26, 2022.

The court said, ‘It is a matter under UAPA. Since bail was denied to the accused on January 24 and this court has suggested that the trial of the case be completed expeditiously, the court has taken up the matter on a day-to-day basis. The hearing of the matter is proposed.

One of the organizers of the Shaheen Bagh protest of December 2019, accused Sharjit Imam was arrested by the Delhi Police from Jehanabad, Bihar in 2020. Imam was granted bail for allegedly making inflammatory speeches at Jameel Millia Islamia. Violence broke out outside the university in December 2019.

In this case, Delhi Police had filed a charge sheet against him. It was alleged that he made speeches inciting hatred, contempt and resentment towards the Government of India.

Delhi Police had said in the chargesheet against Sharjeel, “He is accused of making seditious speeches and inciting a certain section of the community to indulge in illegal activities, which is injurious to the sovereignty and integrity of the country.”
