‘Dead’ man found alive after 7 hours in UP’s mortuary freezer

Moradabad (UP), 21 November

In a strange incident, a 40-year-old man was kept in the freezer of the morgue for about seven hours before being taken out alive.

According to the information, electrician Shrikesh Kumar was hit by a speeding motorcycle, after which he was taken to the district hospital on Thursday night. The doctors had declared him brought dead.

The next day the hospital staff kept the body in the freezer.

About seven hours later, when a ‘panchnama’ or document, which was signed by the family members after identifying the body and agreeing to the autopsy – was to be filed by the police, Kumar’s sister-in-law Madhu Bala noticed that he was showing signs of speed.

In a video that went viral, Bala can be heard saying: “He is not dead at all. How did it happen? Look, he wants to say something, he is breathing.” Moradabad Chief Medical Superintendent Dr Shiv Singh said: “The emergency medical officer had seen the patient at 3 am and there was no heartbeat. He had examined the man several times. After that, he was declared brought dead. But in the morning, a police team and his family found him alive. An inquiry has been ordered. Our priority now is to save his life.” Singh said it is one of those rarest of rare cases… we cannot call it negligence.

Kumar is now undergoing treatment at a health center in Meerut where his condition is improving.

According to her sister-in-law, “she is yet to regain consciousness”.

“We will file a complaint against the doctors for negligence as they almost killed Shrikesh by keeping him in the freezer,” he said.
