Customs officials confiscated fake championship ring

CBP said in a news release that on September 13, Chicago Port of Entry officials found 34 fake New York Yankees rings, 24 from the Chicago Bulls, 22 from the St. Louis Cardinals and six from the Philadelphia Eagles. The agency said the shipment from China was headed to a residence in Florescent, Missouri.

“Such shipments prey on many sports fans nationwide, who may be scammed into paying high prices for counterfeit memorabilia,” LaFonda Sutton-Burke, director of field operations at the agency’s Chicago office, said in the release. “I am extremely proud of these officers’ determination to stop illegal shipments and our commitment to protecting the American economy.”

The seizure comes a month after customs officials in Cincinnati seized two shipments from China and Hong Kong that totaled 500 imitation cartier love bracelets and rings. Had the jewelry been authentic, it would have cost more than $5.2 million.

CBP said that in fiscal year 2019, the agency seized about 27,600 shipments containing counterfeit goods, which if genuine, would have been worth more than $1.5 billion.
