Hong Kong leader John Lee told a news conference on Friday that three border posts that have not yet reopened will open from February 6.

Searches on Chinese travel website Kunar for air tickets to and from Hong Kong and the mainland jumped sevenfold on Friday after China’s announcement, data from state media China Transportation News showed.

China’s announcement came a day after Hong Kong launched a promotional campaign including 500,000 free flights to bring visitors, businesses and investors back to the financial hub after more than three years of tough COVID restrictions.

Hong Kong has been largely locked behind closed borders for the past three years to ward off COVID, with a three-week mandatory quarantine for incoming people as well as intensive testing and screening.
