Carjacking 2 suspects in custody after police chase, accident in Oak Lawn

Oak Lawn, Ill. (WLS) – Police have arrested two carjacking suspects who were leading police on a chase that ended in an accident in south suburban Oak Lawn.

Oak Lawn Police asked residents to avoid 95th Street and Oak Park Avenue or the area near the shelter as they searched for one of the two suspects who fled on foot after crashing into the intersection.

Oak Lawn Police said the suspects were wanted in connection with a carjacking in Chicago on Sunday.

A Gary police officer’s plate reader collided with a stolen vehicle outside Chicago at around 2:15 p.m. Monday, according to Oak Lawn Police. An officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver flew west on I-80/94 into Illinois.

Police followed the vehicle until it got off I-294 at 127th Street in Alsip. Then, police said the vehicle was heading north to 95th Street in Oak Lawn on I-294. The driver then turned east until it crashed into 95th Street and Oak Park Avenue.

Oak Lawn Police said the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody at the scene. Police along with dogs were seen looking for another suspect in the vehicle.

Police said the second suspect was taken into custody around 5 pm. Video of Chopper 7 shows officers apprehending the suspect in the parking lot of a nearby car dealership.

Several police departments were involved, including the Police of Oak Lawn and Gary, Indiana. There was no report of any casualties.
