Bill Miller Bar-BQ manager donates kidney to save customer’s life

San Antonio In 2010, Cecilia Canizens was diagnosed with kidney failure. Since she went on dialysis, she may have asked friends, family, and strangers with dozens of donor cards to see if they could be a match to help get a kidney.

Sophia Parish, a manager at Bill Miller Bar-BQ, takes pride in her customer service. That’s how she got to know Canizens.

Their friendship began when he asked the canines why he only needed a little water with every order.

“The canines began to talk, ‘Hello madam, how are you?’ And we absolutely love, totally and utterly clicked,” Parrish said.

That friendship developed and continued for months. As for Parish, the canniness reminded her of one of her favorite aunts. So when it came down to it, he offered to test it to see if he was a match.

“I do anything, everything to help anybody. And if I’m able to help anybody, I will. And that’s what I did. And I said, at least I can see that.” That’s whether I’m a match,” Parish said. She was surprised that she was a match and after chatting with her family, she decided to move forward with Dan.

“It is in our nature to help people, because if you cannot help people, why are we here? You know, we need to help each other as much as possible,” Parish said.

Both are doing well in recovery.

Michelle Segovia, communications director for the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance, says this year has been successful in getting more people to become registered donors.

“They have the opportunity to save eight lives through organ donation,” she said.
