Assam bypolls: RJD extends support to Congress, AIUDF, CPI; Urge not to vote for BJP – India Times Hindi News

In a statement on Tuesday, the party said that the RJD has extended its support to the candidates of various opposition parties for the upcoming bypolls in Assam. It urged people not to vote for the BJP-led coalition government in the by-polls to five assembly seats in the state on October 30, saying the ruling alliance has failed to address the problems of the people.

The RJD will support CPI candidates in Thaura constituency, AIUDF candidates in Gosaigaon and Congress candidates in Bhabnipur, Tamulpur and Mariani, the statement said. It alleged that the BJP-led government has failed to address burning issues like price rise and urged voters to ensure defeat for themselves and their allies.

The Gosaigaon and Tamulpur bypolls are necessitated due to the demise of the sitting MLAs, while MLAs from Bhawanipur, Mariani and Thaura have resigned from their seats to join the ruling BJP. In the March-April assembly elections, the Congress had won the Thaura and Mariani seats, while the UPPL won the Gosaigaon seat. BPF and AIUDF had secured Tamulpur and Bhabnipur respectively.

The RJD was part of the Congress-led grand alliance in the state elections held earlier this year. Its other allies were AIUDF, BPF, CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML), Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM), Adivasi National Party (ANP) and Jimochyan (Deori) People’s Party (JPP). However, the alliance was broken after the election following a defeat at the hands of the NDA.

In the 126-member Assam Assembly, the strength of the BJP is 59. The ruling allies – the AGP and the UPPL – have nine and five MLAs respectively, while the Congress has 27, the AIUDF 15, the BPF three and the CPI(M) one. is an independent member. Former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had vacated his Majuli seat after being inducted into the Union Cabinet, but the bypoll for it was not announced as he submitted his resignation after the dates for the other five seats were announced.
